The company seeks to engage an Occupational Health
& Safety (OHS) Officer for the Itimpi Solar
Development Project – Phase II (ISP-II), located in the
Garneton area of Kitwe, on a one-year contract.
The role will be responsible for providing inspection and
advisory service aspects of occupational health and safety
in order to effectively promote safe working conditions
around the Project site. Further, the role will be required
to support the implementation of the Company’s Occupational
Health and Safety Management Systems in line with ISO
45001:2018 standard, IFC Performance Standards and
applicable health and safety national regulations.
The job holder will report to the Projects Manager - Itimpi
II Solar Development Project.
Key Accountabilities
- To ensure the day-to-day management of safety and
environmental issues are addressed by the local project
team.
- Assist in the implementation of safety, health and
environmental standards in line with CEC integrated
management system and the project objectives.
- Attend and participate in safety meetings, toolbox talk
meetings and other safety programs to provide health,
safety and environmental (HSE) information and support to
the project team.
- Implement in-house HSE training and awareness program
for all contract employees, including those of
subcontractors, to improve employees’ understanding of
safety rules and regulations to reduce accidents. Provide
advice on topics like occupational illnesses, fire risks,
and safeguarding company equipment.
- Conduct site inductions for employees and contractors
as well as other training as required.
- Assist and partake in the formulation of risk
assessments and control procedures. Monitor and ensure
effective implementation of control measures determined
from risk assessments.
- Carry out in-depth investigations into all reported
incidents to determine the direct and underlying causes so
as to make appropriate recommendations to the management
team.
- Assist with the investigation of near-misses, incidents
and unsafe working conditions.
- Conduct daily snap checks (informal inspections) and
periodic formal safety and environmental inspections in all
areas to ensure compliance with Company and regulatory HSE
standards on the project site.
- Regular analysis of safety statistics to determine
trends in order to focus on shortcomings and
poor-performing areas and enable informed decisions.
- Carry out public safety sensitizations to disseminate
safety information relating to the power network
installations to members of the community in which the
project is located.
- Ensure personal protective equipment (such as hearing
protection, dust masks, and safety glasses) are used
correctly.
- Ensure that all equipment is installed and operated
safely.
- Ensure the safe handling, storage and disposal of waste
and hazardous substances at the project site.
- Ensure that alcohol screening and confirmation tests at
the entrance to Company facilities are carried out
routinely on employees, contractors and visitors.
- Demonstrate behaviours in line with CEC values,
standards and expectations of a professional workplace.
- Participate as an effective team member in working
collaboratively with leaders, peers and relevant others
(including from other teams) to achieve project goals.
- Prepare monthly reports on the HSE performance of the
Project site.
To be considered for this role, you will be
required to have:
- Grade 12 School Certificate.
- Diploma in Occupation Health and Safety (Degree from a
reputable institution will be highly regarded)
- Engineering and/or Environmental Management
qualifications will be an added advantage.
- Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ).
- Minimum of 2 years safety experience within the power
utility/ mining industry.
Specific Competencies Required
- Good writing and interpersonal skills.
- Good public relations skills.
- Good presentation skills using constructive and logical
approaches.
- Computer literate.
- Sound business acumen with ability to anticipate and
interpret changes impacting on health and safety programs
and approaches.
- Knowledge of OHS&E systems, preferably ISO 45001 and
ISO14001 management systems.
- Should have a proactive approach and sound knowledge of
Occupational Health Safety applications along with
excellent communication both written and oral.
- Should have clean drivers’ license.
